Chiropractic care is well known for being able to help people manage sciatic pain. At Infinite Chiropractic & Wellness in Brisbane we offer a whole-body chiropractic approach to help relieve this type of nerve pain and help prevent it from coming back.
What is sciatica?
Sciatica, or inflammation of the sciatic nerve, happens specifically when there is tension or compression along the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body, exiting from the lumbar spine and running down the back of each leg. This nerve controls muscles in the back of the thigh and provides sensation to the skin of the leg and the foot.
Some of the symptoms that people can experience with sciatica include:
- Numbness and/or tingling down the buttock and into the leg
- Muscle spasms and tightness
- Pain when sitting or standing for long periods
- A constant burning or pulling sensation down into the leg
So, what can be done about it?
Let’s dive in.
At Infinite Chiropractic & Wellness in Brisbane, one of the key considerations when addressing sciatic pain is taking into the account the body as a whole. If we can rule out any physical trauma or underlying pathologies causing direct compression to the nerve itself, many cases of sciatica originate from long standing dysfunction and irritation to the spinal joints in the lower back itself.
These structural and mechanical imbalances of the spine occur when there is physical trauma to the body (this can be either large events or small ‘micro’ traumas that accumulate over time), and they often compound resulting in:
- Joint pain
- Stiffness
- Reduced physical range of motion
- Inflammation to the tissues around the spine
All these factors can contribute to extra tension on the nervous system itself, producing symptoms that present like sciatica.
This is where improving posture really takes effect.
At Infinite Chiropractic & Wellness in Brisbane, we offer a different chiropractic approach when we look at helping people with sciatica. Rather than only treating the presenting symptoms, we see the body as a whole functioning unit.
Using the lens of Advanced-Biostructural CorrectionTM, we can identify common postural changes and patterns people have that are contributing to their limited mechanical integrity and nervous system function. Put simply, poor body mechanics over time can lead to the deterioration of posture, which can put tension and stress on the underlying tissues, including nerves.
Think of your nervous system (that lives inside your spine) like a long lengthwise piece of towel, held at each end. Every physical trauma to the body causes that piece of towel to twist and tighten over time. Micro trauma after micro trauma that towel will twist and bend, creating compensations. Eventually, over time, there are no more compensations that can be made. This is when the person can start to experience symptoms such as pain, stiffness, inflammation and other signs of nerve tension, such as sciatica.
How is our treatment approach different?
Here at Infinite Chiropractic & Wellness in Brisbane, we utilise Advanced Biostructural Correction TM, which offers a process of unwinding or unravelling these spinal misalignments and compensation patterns. During each visit your body is assessed using the ABC TM method, where specific adjustments are performed to correct the spinal misalignments that are contributing to the deterioration of your posture. With every adjustment, the goal we always keep in mind is how can we improve your posture, both on the day, and over the course of the entire unwinding process.
When we restore normal alignment and remove the compensation patterns keeping that body stuck in a disadvantageous position, we can have a significant impact on posture, and on the tension, stress and pressure that person is experiencing in their body.
