Here’s what you need to know about poor posture, what it may be doing to your health, and how you can change it.
Here at Infinite Chiropractic & Wellness in Wynnum, we focus largely on the improvement and ongoing care of our client’s posture. We look at posture as a framework or a window into a person’s health, their physiology and their overall function. We also track and measure posture as a way of assessing how well people are improving under our care.
Picture this. You have spent the better part of your entire adult life sitting at a desk working nine to five, five days a week, week in and week out. Your body has become so adept to operating in a sedentary lifestyle as a way of life. You look closely in the mirror one day and you notice that:
- Your shoulders are almost stuck in a forward rounded position.
- You have an unusual looking bump at the base of your neck.
- You are starting to get some little niggles that weren’t there a few years ago.
- You’re starting to experience headaches towards the end of the day.
- You have this uncomfortable feeling between your shoulder blades that doesn’t go away anymore.
- Your lower back and hips are starting to ache.
Sound familiar?
These are the early tell-tale signs that your posture is starting to deteriorate.
You see, the structure of our body will always dictate how well the body can function. And what we know about posture is that it doesn’t just affect how our physical body operates, it also can impact our physiology as well. Things like how well our lungs and heart are working, how much blood supply our brain is getting – these are also all affected and influenced by our posture1.
Kind of scary, but also kind of cool, right?!
Because if chiropractic adjustments can help improve posture, then they may also influence our underlying physiology as well.
So, how Can Chiropractors fix posture?
We address the biomechanical issues that lead to poor posture in the first place.
Here at Infinite Chiropractic & Wellness in Wynnum, we work using a specific chiropractic technique called Advanced Biostructural Correction, or ABC for short. ABC is focused solely on making corrections to the body that the body is unable to do on its own, to unwind and change the layers of compensation patterns that your body has created which has caused you to develop this unideal posture in the first place.
So, what does this mean exactly?
Over our lifetime our bodies experience physical trauma, both big and small, that lead to misalignments.
This can be in the form of major accidents and falls, or it can be the small things that accumulate over time such as sitting at a desk for hours on end. Both types of physical trauma have the capacity to create small misalignments to the joints of the spine.
Chiropractic adjustments correct the misalignments to allow posture to change over time.
Fortunately, some of these misalignments can be corrected by the body. Sometimes, however, the body has misalignments that are unable to be self-corrected. In this scenario, the body will cleverly create a compensation, or sometimes layers of compensations, to allow the body to carry on functioning as per normal. As we develop more and more of these compensations, our bodies can become more stiff, more rigid, less mobile, and eventually, we can experience pain.
This is where the chiropractic adjustments come in. Through a systematic process, these spinal misalignments are detected and corrected through a specific system that is unique to Advanced Biostructural Correction. When these adjustments are repeated over time, we start to see the posture changing and improving as these misalignments and compensation patterns are corrected and unwound.
These adjustments are safe, gentle and specific to what that person needs on the day. Sometimes people describe having an ABC adjustment like a ‘sigh’ of relief to the body. These adjustments allow the body to unwind another layer of tension and continues that person on the path to much better posture.
